The answers to overcome our adversities, crises, limitations, disabilities, or obstacles are mostly either inside or around the same thing, which has been limiting us in the first place. Just by adopting a simple shift in focus from “the walls to the windows” – from ‘limitations’ that restrict us to the ‘leverages’ that are available, could save us a lifetime of emotional trauma. The adversity of any kind could bring with it challenging limitations as ‘walls’ that seem to prevent us from doing or getting what we want. More often, people get too engrossed in trying to break those ‘walls’ that they forget to see beyond the walls. They fail to see the larger picture that there could already be several ‘windows’ of opportunities and leverages available right through those restrictive ‘walls’ which may have the power to transform our adversity into unparalleled advantages.
I am a permanently disabled polio survivor who lost his ability to walk well before reaching the age to walk. I contracted polio when I was merely 6 months old. I lost my ability to walk well before the age to learn to walk. And I have been permanently disabled since then.
I was born in extreme poverty in the remote areas of India. I grew up amidst the uncertainty if I could ever be able to get any education. I constantly felt unwanted and inferior through a series of bullying and rejections.
For several years, I crawled on the floor with one leg. As a kid, I had to wear iron-clad calipers weighing more than my weight to hold my legs in place, to stand, and to walk like a transformer. But I could never match the pace of my classmates. They always left me behind, and I had to come home alone every day while dragging my leg all the way. Those moments told me that if I could not walk or walk fast, I would find a way to walk faster somehow. Then began my homosapien-type evolution, trying every possible walking aid painfully and painstakingly.
My best bet was to use whatever leverages I had, which was to stay put in a chair with no mobility. I saw that as my edge. It gave me unobstructed time to immerse myself in the world of learning. I tried every workable experiment to stretch the limit to learn faster. Those early life experimentations transformed me into a learning scientist and a training leader out of my adversities. Now, I stand as a global performance scientist, one among few global experts specializing in speeding up professional and organizational expertise. While I still cannot walk, I teach organizations and professionals about how to walk faster in whatever they do.
I had no choice but to leverage my learning journey to propel myself out of adversity. But it developed me into a learning leader who could help professionals and employees to develop into better and more effective leaders.
While I had experienced the risks of not being able to go to school, I have been awarded 2 doctorates and have earned over 100+ international and educational credentials, including 3 masters degrees, several PGDs, diplomas, certifications.
While, back then I could not afford to buy a book to read in childhood. Now, I am a prolific author of 20 multi-genre books, ranging from poetry to technical to scientific domains and business. Now, I help corporate executives and leaders on how to speed up their employees performance by 2X. I help professionals learn faster, become star performers, and excel in their performance at a faster rate. I live by the mantra that the thing you lack the most could be your fuel to excel upon it.

Delivered at the Idea and Inspiration platform, this personal talk is my first public appearance talking about my disability journey. I shared how no disability is worse than the mental ones we impose for ourselves in the form of limiting beliefs and excuses. I revealed how I transformed his limitations into advantages… and how you too can break free and move forward from self-imposed thought-limitations you may have set upon yourself.

I talked about how we don’t need to struggle with or break the walls that are holding us back. Instead, we should look for windows of opportunities, leverages and advantages among those walls.
