About the book
This book presents a research thesis of a large-scale study conducted with over 50 large organizations in 7 countries with 80 business leaders to understand how businesses speed up the proficiency of their employees to meet business challenges. The book describes a start-to-end research study that explored the concept of ‘accelerated proficiency’ of employees in organizations. The book is organized into five chapters. The book introduces the concept of accelerated proficiency in a business context in light of reviews of four decades of classic studies. The research methodology to identify sources, recruit participants, and the mechanism to collect as well as analyze data have been explained in detail. The book reveals six business practices implemented by organizations across the board that seem to make a major impact in shortening the time to proficiency of employees. Important observations and findings have been discussed as implications in regards to how organizations orchestrated six business practices as an input-output-feedback system to reduce the time-to-proficiency of the workforce. The book briefly explains how these six practices were implemented through a set of twenty-four strategies in various contexts. The concepts and findings discussed in this book contribute significantly to the body of knowledge on accelerated proficiency. In particular, the conceptual model and the framework developed in this study can be implemented across a range of contexts, business sectors, job types, and settings to reduce the time-to-proficiency of the workforce.
This book is meant for researchers and practitioners in the learning and training domain. This book is equally useful for those who are taking up a doctorate program and yet to develop their thesis.
This research thesis is organized into six chapters:
Chapter 1: Introduction: The first chapter laid out and focused on introducing the research topic. The chapter also laid the foundation for the remaining chapters by summarising the literature review, research problem, and justification to conduct this study.
Chapter 2: Literature Review: This chapter reviews the existing literature and identifies the gaps in the literature regarding the focus area of study. This chapter reviews different theories, and models found relevant to accelerating proficiency. Gaps from existing theories and models are noted to establish a research context and problem for this study.
Chapter 3: Research Methodology: This chapter presents the research design and selection of the data collection methodologies and qualitative research methodology. It offers a justification for choosing the pragmatic paradigm and describes how data were collected and processed. The data analysis methodology is also explained. The methods employed for ensuring validation and reliability of the research study and its findings are described as well.
Chapter 4: Research Findings: This chapter discusses the details of data analysis performed on the collected data and presents the findings from the data analysis. Results are presented for each of the research questions in two parts. The first part of the chapter describes the summary of overarching themes that were formed during data analysis based on the emergent themes. The second part of the chapter describes the details of emergent themes noted under each research question. Part three of the chapter provides an analysis of the results of time-to-proficiency reduction seen in project cases analyzed in this study.
Chapter 5: Conclusion and Implications: The final chapter discusses the results, explains the major interpretations, and relates the findings to the existing literature. This chapter outlines an important section on a conceptual model of accelerated proficiency that is derived from the findings and discussions. This chapter also outlines the major contributions made by this study to the body of knowledge. The limitations are explained and a detailed agenda for future research for extending this study.
