About the book
This book explains the importance to acquire complex problem-solving in today’s job environment. The book describes how to use five problem-centered methods to design training for real-world complex problem-solving skills. The book briefly describes the five methods in the context of complex problem-solving skills – Problem-based learning (PBL), Project-based learning, Scenario-based learning (SBL), Case-based learning method (CBL), and Simulation-based learning. The book also specifies six research-based guidelines, and how training experts can design a training curriculum that ensures acquiring and accelerating complex problem-solving skills in any complex domain.
Target readers
This book is meant for instructional designers, training designers, and learning designers dealing with the design of curricula for technical or non-technical programs whereby the goal is to impart complex problem-solving skills, complex technical troubleshooting skills, or other higher-order skills.
Book outline
Chapter 1 outlines the critical challenge of imparting complex problem-solving skills to the workforce at organizations. The chapter describes the meaning and dimensions of complex problem-solving.
Chapter 2 emphasizes why it is important to develop complex problem-solving skills in organizations.
Chapter 3 discusses the first method using problem-based learning for training complex problem-solving skills. The chapter discusses the important features of the method and explains where it is appropriate to apply this method. General design guidelines for using this method are also explained.
Chapter 4 discusses the second method using project-based learning for training complex problem-solving skills. The chapter discusses the important features of the method and explains where it is appropriate to apply this method. General design guidelines for using this method are also explained.
Chapter 5 discusses the third method using scenario-based learning for training complex problem-solving skills. The chapter discusses the important features of the method and explains where it is appropriate to apply this method. General design guidelines for using this method are also explained.
Chapter 6 discusses the fourth method using case-based learning for training complex problem-solving skills. The chapter discusses the important features of the method and explains where it is appropriate to apply this method. General design guidelines for using this method are also explained.
Chapter 7 discusses the fifth method using simulation-based learning for training complex problem-solving skills. The chapter discusses the important features of the method and explains where it is appropriate to apply this method. General design guidelines for using this method are also explained.
Chapter 8 discusses two variations of problem-based and case-based methods namely focused discussion and problem-based case learning – for training complex problem-solving skills. The chapter discusses the important features of the method and explains where it is appropriate to apply this method. General design guidelines for to use of this method are also explained.
Chapter 9 discusses five guidelines to accelerate the development of complex problem-solving skills and some tips on how to design such an enabling training.
